Marcus Cocceius Nerva (30-98 CE) became Roman Emperor in 96 after Domitian.

When Domitian was killed, Nerva was selected as a transitional figure probably because he was old and childless. He was a senator with a less than brilliant career, though he had served as consul under Vespasian and Domitian.

Nerva restored the good relationship between the Senate and the emperor, that had suffered much under Domitian. Nerva adopted Trajan, who served as commander of the army on the German frontier, as successor, whereby he instituted the new rule of adoptive emperors, also known as the Five Good Emperors.
