Hooded/Carrion Crow

The Hooded Crow or the Carrion Crow (Corvus corone) is a common scavenger.

The crow is c. 45cm, and it exists in two variants. One is completely black, the other is grey on the back and on the belly.

It breeds in trees but will very often forage in the open, so it’s preferred environment is open land with the occasional trees.

The crow is rather shy, but very adaptable to diverse habitats. It forages in open fields, along the roads (where it eats animals killed in the traffic), on beaches and in garbage dumps. It is very often a scavenger, taking all sorts of dead animals, large and small. It also takes eggs and is sometimes hunted for that.

It lives in flocks, but while breeding each couple defends an extended territory from other crows.
