Ravenna is a city in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna with many monuments from late Antiquity.
From 402 CE Ravenna was the capital of the western Roman Empire, until the abdication of the last emperor in 476 CE.
Ravenna was then the capital of the Ostrogothic Kingdom until 540 CE, when the Byzantine Empire retook the city.
From 540 CE until 751 CE Ravenna was the centre of the Exarchate of Ravenna, the de facto capital of Byzantine Italy.
