Antinous

Antinous was a young man of the entourage of emperor Hadrian and he followed Hadrian on his numerous travels around the empire. Antinous died under unknown circumstances on the Nile, which left Hadrian devastated by sorrow.
Hadrian deified Antinous and ordered the construction of temples for the worship of Antinous all over the empire (the many surviving statues are probably from these temples) and entire towns were dedicated to the memory of Antinous.
The nature of their relationship is unknown. It could have been a lasting homosexual relationship, or Antinous could simply have been the son Hadrian never had.
