Aesculapius was the god of medicine and healing.
He was identified with the Greek god Asclepius, son of Apollo and the Greek princess Phlegyas.
Many of the temples for Aesculapius served as Aesclepeia, healing sanctuaries or hospitals. There was a Temple of Aesculapius on the Tiberine Island in Rome, where there has been hospitals ever since, and there still is!
