Take me to the pictures! (6 photos in photo gallery) The praefurnia are the ovens of the baths of the villa romana del casale. Their purpose was to heat the calidaria and the tepidarium of the baths. The ovens are accessed from the outside of the baths of the villa. Each of the three ovens had a cylidrical shape. On the inside the ovens were covered with terracotta pipes to prevent the outer wall from cracking due to the heat. The warm rooms of the baths were heated by leading the hot air from the fires in the oven under the suspended floor of the calidaria and the tepidarium. The upper parts of the ovens are collapsed, leaving the internal structure of the ovens exposed. Photo gallery of 6 pictures for "Praefurnia" Prints of the photographs are available — read more here.
