The office of Rex Sacrorum was created to continue the religious duties of the kings, after the expulsion of the last king in 510 BCE.

The title means "King of Sacred Things" and means the offices encompassed only the religious part of kingship.

The rex sacrorum was appointed by the Pontifex Maximus, the leading priest of the Roman state religion.
