Vulcan was the Roman god for fire and metal working. He was the protector of smiths, and was normally depicted as a bearded man, dressed as a worker and carrying the utensils of a smith.

A special priest, the Flamen Volcanalis, took care of his cult. There were two major festivals in Vulcan's honour: the Tubilustrium on May 23, and the Volcanalia on August 23.

There was a Temple of Vulcan in the Campus Martius. Vulcan was the patron of Ostia, the habour city of Rome.
